Custom blocklist support

NextDNS does not support the upload of custom blocklists, blacklist or whitelist for several reasons:

  • Hosting a slightly different version of a well known blocklist for each user would not be scalable.
  • We could not guarantee those custom blocklists are regularly updated and free of dangerous rules that could affect the stability of your browsing.
  • Many blocklists are not well suited for DNS and need to be verified by our team.

If you know a public and well maintained list that may be interesting for other users, you can open an issue on our github repository.

If there was a way to a private custom blocklist for only that users account that cannot be shared publicly then that would be better. I would love to create my own private blocklist for my account only.

Is anyone updating these lists?  There are a bunch that haven’t been updated in a long time, and they’re not very well organized.  For example, all AdGuard lists should be together, all a Easylist options aren’t supported, etc.   Needs an update!

Michael S The date in the github repository is the date when the list has been added. It is only a reference, the actual list content is fetched from the source every 30 minutes and kept constantly up to date on all our servers.

NextDNS I’d like the AdGuard Annoyances filter and the AdGuard URL filter but you don’t offer them. You have other lists that look like they’re no longer updated.  How often do you add new lists or delete lists that are no longer updated?

NextDNS I am not talking about GitHub I’m talking about your webpage.  The date I’m talking about pretty clearly show the last update ranging from an hour ago to years.  See attached.

NextDNS you must REMOVE ALL OUTDATED BLOCKLISTS from the Blocklists section. Those don't help users at all, because they are really useless. You should consider adding the others which are updated daily and are more useful.

Can you please add the following unblock list from adguard. Search ads and self-promotion

Filter that unblocks searches (Duckduckgo, Google, Bing, Yahoo) and self-promo ads. Self-promotion definition: When an ad on a website is promoting this very website or other websites/social media/etc. closely related to it, such an ad is considered a self-promoting one.

    https://filters.adtidy.org/android/filters/10_optimized.txt

Sometimes blocking ads breaks app such as HotUKdeals, this filter fixes this amongst other self promoting ads in Chrome when shopping for stuff.

Ajaz Ahmed On an unrelated note but a possible solution, using OISD or using the NextDNS Ads & Tracking with Allow Affiliate Tracking option should get you what you want. OISD is just a more lean filter that lets a few ads through for the sake of everything working, Allow Affiliate Tracking has a whitelist of sorts that allows domains that might be needed for email links etc and recently it even hides your IP on those domains to maximize privacy while giving you convenience. Should be an instant solution for the said problems.

Do you really need to add more blocklists beyond the default one ??

It is not clear if there are duplicates between the different lists?

Competitors will likely offer custom block listing. I know AdGuard DNS is doing such. Same with ControldD.

Please consider a work around to make custom lists. Perhaps a hosts list or a custom URL listing?

Going to delete my account because you dont allow adding custom block lists like "https://v.firebog.net/hosts/lists.php?type=tick" and whitelists like "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anudeepND/whitelist/master/domains/whitelist.txt".
