Custom blocklist support

NextDNS does not support the upload of custom blocklists, blacklist or whitelist for several reasons:

  • Hosting a slightly different version of a well known blocklist for each user would not be scalable.
  • We could not guarantee those custom blocklists are regularly updated and free of dangerous rules that could affect the stability of your browsing.
  • Many blocklists are not well suited for DNS and need to be verified by our team.

If you know a public and well maintained list that may be interesting for other users, you can open an issue on our github repository.

Do you really need to add more blocklists beyond the default one ??

It is not clear if there are duplicates between the different lists?

Yeah the HaGeZi lists are better but more aggressive than the default NextDNS blocklist. To each his own, I like HaGeZi Multi Pro++ but that’s just me. I even add stuff to that list like Facebook, TikTok, Microsoft, and Google.

I also have hblock because that covers a lot of stuff too, but yes there are duplicates. I haven’t noticed any issues with having those 2 lists together.

Competitors will likely offer custom block listing. I know AdGuard DNS is doing such. Same with ControldD.

Please consider a work around to make custom lists. Perhaps a hosts list or a custom URL listing?

Going to delete my account because you dont allow adding custom block lists like "https://v.firebog.net/hosts/lists.php?type=tick" and whitelists like "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/anudeepND/whitelist/master/domains/whitelist.txt".

First I must say that I am very grateful for the work that you guys have put into NextDNS. It is an amazing service that I heavily depend on.

Having said that, I absolutely second the motions from many of your users, to please allow us to use our own custom blocklists on our individual accounts, which should not affect anyone else. If there is currently not a way to do this, please consider adding it, so that if we introduce false positives or other side effects, it only affects our own account. I consider this a critical feature that should be added.

I also second the request to remove stale lists that are no longer maintained. Anything that hasn't been updated in over a year, I think should be on the chopping block. Even some that haven't been updated in a few months, such as NoTrack Tracker from quidsup, where the owner has announced he will no longer maintain it.

I just don't see how any of those individuals who maintain the existing lists are any different from any of us making this request. Especially those who have neglected or abandoned their lists, yet you include them. If we maintain our own lists and keep them current and useful, why not allow us to share them with friends, family, and our mobile devices via our personal NextDNS link?
