Unidentified devices

Hello there,

I have configured almost all devices from my home network but it seems it's not everything configured as it should be. I am receiving a lot of queries from "unidentified devices". I can see my devices on the list but not my Synololgy NAS and Chromecast devices.

How can I identify these two as well? I am also using one profile because everything goes through router.

Also here are some results from testing:

"status": "ok",
"protocol": "DOT",
"anycast": true,
"clientName": "unknown-dot",

    Installing NextDNS CLI got an error message.

    Don't know how to solve this either and don't know if I have curl on my router Asus ax4200. ☹️

       I thought that proxy dns is something similar or will behave like vpn. So basically I will need AdGuardHome and some dns service such as AdGuardDNS or NextDNS?

      I want to have a proper firewall for my home network. Just need a better protection from one side and to configure it just for challenge as other side. As third maybe I will use it as a NAS device as well to upgrade my previous Synology device which is not + (plus) device and it lacks with ram memory.

       A http proxy is kind of similar to a VPN, in that http traffic is passed through the proxy server before the destination. The VPN however redirects all data traffic making it look like you are connected at the VPN server. The DNS proxy in this case is only on your home network and will act much like your router but only for DNS requests.
      Yes you still need a DNS service to connect to, the proxy is just an extra step in between.

       It should be ok to open a new thread, I would think Discussions is the correct category for that.

    Hi, I think the only way to show identified devices is for those devices to have the ID name listed within them.  All other devices like TV, Smart Devices, Printers, etc should all be using your routers dns settings.  On the NextDNS setup page at bottom shows you how to set your ID profile with a "name", after doing these steps each device name will show under Analytics.  I had Edge coming up on my laptop as "unidentified" traffic due to not setting the DNS DOH with the same custom profile name as I set my laptops network dns settings to.  After making sure the browsers i use and network dns profile where all the same custom id name it works. Your TV's etc should show up as your IP address or if you setup a custom DNS over TLS name under your routers settings as the "router".

      Hello,

      I already give the "unidentified devices" the router address and now I'm waiting on the results on the Analytics page as they show up as the router as well with DoT, since I cannot define their custom name such as my browsers from my computers or my smartphones on the network. I also use dishwasher, air conditioner, but they didn't make any problems from the start.

      On my SmartTv and TvBox I have selected DHCP option and by doing that by default the gateway and DNS Server 1 receives the routers address.

      I assume now it's better.

      Thanks for your response as well. 😉
