brwec5c6832ddf2.hub

NextDNS analytics page shows my device connected to brwec5c6832ddf2.hub over a thousand times but what's .hub TLD - can't find it listed in the security tab?

What kind of domain is this? Would appreciate some help and insight.

Thanks.

Did it actually resolve and connect? I just checked https://www.iana.org/domains/root/db and it doesn’t appear that .hub exists as a valid TLD. Perhaps you have some rogue software making calls to invalid TLDs

Thanks for replying. I suspected it was something to do with the router... some kind of local loopback address? But now I see it on another Windows PC on a different network with a different router and ISP, this time wpad.hub ~80k queries over the past month! Only on the Windows PCs, not Android or Linux.

.hub connections are listed in the resolved category on the Analytics page.. but I can't find wpad.hub in the logs!

Not sure if this will be useful, but here's what Brave AI said:

    Wpad.hub "wpad.hub"

WPAD is a protocol used by clients to locate the URL of a configuration file that determines the proxy settings for a network. The configuration file, typically named wpad.dat, contains rules written in JavaScript syntax that specify when to use a proxy server and when to access resources directly.

Based on the search results, here are key findings related to wpad.hub:

    1. Autoprox: A tool for troubleshooting WPAD usage, which can detect and save the wpad.dat file in a temporary location.
    2. WPAD Server Fiddler Extension: A Fiddler extension that runs a WPAD DHCP server, responding to client requests for proxy auto-discovery.
    3. WPAD (Web Proxy Auto-Discovery) Protocol: A method used by clients to locate the URL of a configuration file using DHCP and/or DNS discovery methods.
    4. PAC (Proxy Auto-Configuration) files: The wpad.dat file is a type of PAC file that defines proxy rules using JavaScript syntax.

There is no specific information on wpad.hub being a dedicated hub or server for WPAD. However, the search results suggest that wpad.hub might be a reference to a central location or authority for managing WPAD configuration files or proxy settings.

In summary, wpad.hub "wpad.hub" appears to be a reference to a hypothetical or conceptual hub for WPAD management, rather than a specific implementation or server. The protocol and tools mentioned above focus on client-side discovery and configuration of proxy settings, rather than a centralized hub for WPAD management.

Different devices have different ways of trying to automatically configure web proxy servers.   WPAD protocol is used to help with the auto configuration and typically relies on DNS.   (Proxy servers are often used in enterprise environments, not home networks).   You can use your favorite search engine to lookup “disable wpad”.  There’s many answers available for different devices, particularly Windows.    Hopefully one or more of the answers will work for you.
