Are you blocking VPN somehow ?

Hi,

I've paid for NextDNS and it seems to work better without a VPN.

I'm using a raspberry pi with Pi-Hole and cloudflared. Using cloudflare DNS servers as proxy works pretty forward even behind a VPN, however, using NextDNS gives me the following errors (only happening with NextDNS servers) which results in giving SERVFAIL replies :

Aug 10 19:16:52 raspberrypi cloudflared[18316]: 2021-08-10T18:16:52Z ERR failed to connect to an HTTPS backend "https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX" error="failed to perform an HTTPS request: Post \"https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX\": unexpected EOF"
Aug 10 19:16:52 raspberrypi cloudflared[18316]: 2021-08-10T18:16:52Z ERR failed to connect to an HTTPS backend "https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX" error="failed to perform an HTTPS request: Post \"https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX\": context deadline exceeded"
Aug 10 19:16:52 raspberrypi cloudflared[18316]: 2021-08-10T18:16:52Z ERR failed to connect to an HTTPS backend "https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX" error="failed to perform an HTTPS request: Post \"https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX\": context deadline exceeded"
Aug 10 19:16:54 raspberrypi cloudflared[18316]: 2021-08-10T18:16:54Z ERR failed to connect to an HTTPS backend "https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX" error="failed to perform an HTTPS request: Post \"https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX\": context deadline exceeded"
Aug 10 19:16:55 raspberrypi cloudflared[18316]: 2021-08-10T18:16:55Z ERR failed to connect to an HTTPS backend "https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX" error="failed to perform an HTTPS request: Post \"https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX\": context deadline exceeded"
Aug 10 19:16:56 raspberrypi cloudflared[18316]: 2021-08-10T18:16:56Z ERR failed to connect to an HTTPS backend "https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX" error="failed to perform an HTTPS request: Post \"https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX\": net/http: request canceled (Client.Timeout exceeded while awaiting headers)"
Aug 10 19:17:01 raspberrypi cloudflared[18316]: 2021-08-10T18:17:01Z ERR failed to connect to an HTTPS backend "https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX" error="failed to perform an HTTPS request: Post \"https://dns.nextdns.io/XXXXX\": unexpected EOF"

Therefore, do you limit somehow the usage of a VPN server ?

Thanks.

I'm not a dev or anyone knowledgeable but check for the option in parental controls and see if Block Bypass Methods is on that is meant to Block VPNs and other DNS services that apps might use to bypass NextDNS if that isn't enabled maybe use your Mobile data and see if that works. To see if it's the addition of Raspberry-Pie layer that is causing the error to reduce the amount of possible brakages / reasons.

Hey "Block Bypass Methods" is not activated :(, I really suspect some limitation regarding the usage of a VPN provider at the same time.

Yann Have you tried disabling Pi-Hole while connecting, you should try that and if it still consists then it could be a problem with NextDNS. Try without the Pi-Hole and see if it still happens.

Using PiHole (with NextDNS) is redundant and will only end in problems.
