No internet on gym wifi

My anytime fitness has some kind of unifi router. There is a captive portal when you use it. With nextdns enabled the wifi connects but there is no internet.

I get similar issues when using wifi provider at my local grocery store.

I'm using iOS. I installed NextDNS using a profile just a month ago.

I saw other posts like this but didn't see any suggestions for what to do.

Please let me know if there is anything simple I can do. For now I've cancelled my recurring subscription, I don't want to fiddle with this, it should just work out of the box. But I've still got it for the next month, so I can try some stuff.

Likely those particular WiFi operators are blocking port 853 (which is the port used for DoT).  I've come across a few public WiFi operators that do this (Android flags "Private DNS is not available...").  You either have to turn off private DNS and use the WiFi operator's DNS or stay on mobile data.  If this is the case it's not a NextDNS issue per se. (i'm assuming your config is working everywhere else - just certain public WiFi operators not working)

yeah that makes sense, indeed that sounds like the problem. I don't want to have to toggle nextdns on and off though, can the profile be configured to fallback to regular DNS if there are issues?

iOS profile is using DoH so this is unlikely a port 853 issue. What you can do is add the WiFi SSID of your gym in the excluded WiFis of your profile (you'll need to create a new one).
