NextDNS not working with Proton VPN

I just signed up for NextDNS. I use Proton VPN. When both are active I get a cannot connect to the internet message and apps stop working.

How do I resolve this apparent conflict?

      NextDNS Same issue but on iPhone 11 iOS 16

    I am running  Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-9750H CPU running Windows 10 Pro version 20H2 build 19042.1466.
