Should adding a domain to the allowlist prevent adblockers blocking it?

I've added some domains to the allowlist but the adblocker I'm using is still preventing access to the site (I have NextDNS configured on my router if that makes any difference).

Is the allowlist meant to override adblockers or do I need to manually disable the adblocker every time I want to visit one of these sites? If  I have to manually disable each time, then I'm curious what the allowlist actually does?

e.g.,

  • When you say adblocker, is this on device adblocking or NextDNS privacy blocklists?

  • No. It will not override a locally installed adblocker plugin for a browser. You will need to make sure that both your adblocker plugin AND NextDNS are not blocking the hostname that you're wanting to whitelist.

Martheen - thanks, I gave this a shot but still not working!

R P M - browser isn't blocking it - the DNS isn't resolving at all (so I know it's NextDNS). As in the screenshot I shared, the Adblock in NextDNS is blocking it.

Underpants Gnome if I understand correctly, you're saying that the 'Allowlist' will not allow anything if it's blocked in the NextDNS adblocker? If that's true, what is the 'Allowlist' for? Maybe I misunderstood the purpose of it!

    • Geordie I mean to say that you have your NextDNS allow list, and then if you're using a local browser adblock plugin, you'll have the allow / deny list there, too. To let something through, both NextDNS and the browser plugin would need to whitelist it (if they are blocking it).

Underpants Gnome Okay cool thanks for clarifying. But anyway, it's not the browser that's blocking it either 🤷‍♂️

Geordie I guess next you should try switching from hagezi pro++ to a lighter version (either pro or Normal).

R P M does that mean the Allowlist doesn’t do anything? I don’t understand why there’s an Allowlist lol

Geordie The allow list does work but for your instance it’s being blocked because of a CNAME match that’s not containing the allowed domain.
Kind of strange I know but it’s mostly there to stop any disguised trackers from sneaking through under a different domain.
