Epicgames and Discord Not Allowed, how to fix?

I have a "conflict" problem.

 

I set Fortnite/Epicgames and Discord under Parental Control as single Apps allowed and connected to a time schedule.  

I also set all the categories, Porn Gambling etc. to blocked in Parental Control.

Now the problem: even if Discord and Epicgames/Fortnite are set to time schedule to work during specific times, they will not work because, believe it or not, they are also in some of the category groups.  

 

What does this mean? I need to set category messaging also the time schedule allowed, which means ALL messaging apps work during during that period even if I only need Discord.

 

While for Epicgames, I can't find where it is also contained, so I needed to add EpicGames.com to the allow list to make it work (even if the specific app is set to allow during the time schedule.

Im not sure if this is a bug or a mistake.  Or maybe I'm setting things up wrong.  Any ideas?

    You will have to eliminate the conflict/overlap. Ex, You have discord allowed (at the app/site level via recreation time) but you still have it restricted (at the category level). The category level restriction will supersede the recreation time exception unless it's also allowed (via recreation time) or unless you remove the category blocking and only block at the app/site level (while keeping the exception enabled via recreation time)

    Note: The superseding restriction logic can be applied nice versa

    Just tested this on my own config and the overlap is with Discord and Social Networks Filter. You could bypass this without turning off the Social Network Filter by pressing and enabling Clock / Recreation icon for that filter that should fix your issue. Just gotta make sure things like gambling and others aren't accidentally turned on that way especially some filters lol but yeah that's the fix. Having both Discord and Social Network filter with Recreation time on.

      Hey Also if anything like this happens in the feature. You can always check the logs and press the arrow on the right of the url, of the blocked domain to see what filters or features block what site. It's pretty easy to figure out that way. As a basic explanation if any filters block it, it shows the name like Social Networks in this case or let's say NextDNS Ads & Trackers Blocklist for a blocked Ad-Site or it shows as Denylist for things that were blocked manually using the Denylist.

    this is exactly how i fixed: I set a clock for the category too in the case of discord because the messaging category in its whole doesn't bother me.  

     

    For epic the solution unfortunately is more direct using the allow list because I CANNOT find the conflict.

     

    However, my point is more generic: NextDNS should solve these conflicts meaning that they should remove SINGLE apps from all category lists or security lists or privacy lists.  This way a user can BLOCK single apps if they want without having to block or unblock the whole category.

     

    For example, they should set these either under privacy -> blocklists like facebook and google, or better set them as single apps under parent control because even there is is a BIG conflict: if you set block list off to facebook is blocks insta, fb, whatsapp but in parent control you can block individual fb insta and whatsapp. So it turns out it's all or nothing.

      JJ They shouldn't remove the domains on the filters in my opinion for people that just want to block the category quickly without setting it up manually. That's probably why it's in the lists on the first place.

      The fix should be more in the line of if a website is blocked or allowed manually it should ignore the blocking of the said site on the filter list. That would keep the simplicity of disabling the whole range of content while also not having any malfunction over what should be prioritized.

      Hey You can still also do this with a mix of allowlist / blacklist with recreation time but if a fix like that was applied it should also help with certain situations where let's say you want to block all chat apps but let discord through without having to deal with allowlist.

      JJ The conflict problem arises when people want to block at the app/site level but also use category blocking and also use recreation time (3 potential points of overlap) and that's no even considering the denylist as another point of potential overlap. The overlap/conflict is created by the user, people who don't use recreation time at all or only use it with app/site level blocking or only use it with category blocking are not going to experience the parental control overlap/conflict problem. I don't see NextDNS changing how this feature works based on your argument(s) because the blocklist argument will result in another point of potential overlap/conflict and the app removal argument will remove functionality for users who want to block a whole category (ex, social networks) but still have an option to enable an app/site exception within said category (ex, a discord exception or a facebook exception for certain days/hours of the week). Not saying they won't change this feature at all but we'll need better ideas
