Google Photos Sync Issue

Setting up private dns to NextDNS in mobile caused issues in Google photos sync. The photos failed to be successfully backed up to the servers. Is this a known issue. This issue started occuring in the past 15-20 days.

NextDNS by itself does not block anything. The settings, options and lists does it. Look in the Logs, at details, what is blocked and by which list or setting.
This should be the first thing to check when something does not work.

If you use NextDNS with all the settings off and without any list enabled you will see that is working just like any public DNS, without any filtering.

The advantage of using NextDNS, besides the ability to block some ads, Trackers and some possible attacks, is that you have logs.

All the options in Security, Privacy, Parental Control, Denylist can block some things.

It would be better to don't enable any list which is not updated regularly and also use only a few good ones, not dozens.

Also read and try to understand what which option is doing before enable it.

I had the same problem. My photos were always getting stuck on ‘Preparing to backup photos’ and the uploading  notification would just sit there, unmoving. Sometimes it would get to the point of overheating the phone as it repeatedly tried to upload and fail. For ages I thought it was a problem with the app, but eventually narrowed it down to NextDNS.

Looking through my logs for blocked domains, during the times I was trying to sync, I found that I needed to add photos.googleapis.com to my Allowlist. After that, all my photos backed up as expected.

I hope that works for you :)

Edit: The logs said the troublesome rule was part of the ‘Energized Xtreme Extension’ blocklist, if you find a different blocklist is causing the issue, perhaps with a different URL, I’d love to know so I (and anyone reading) can be aware.

Ken Adams using heavy filters always results in issues, I've made a thread about the filters that have nearly 0 issues. OISD/1HostLite/Notracking all try their best to keep out of issues, it does result in some ads going through but you will rarely have to whitelist anything if not at all with OISD.
