Reason's for NextDNS?
Hello,
I've been looking for a good DNS filtering service for a while now. First of all, privacy is extremely important to me [which also has a bit to do with my thread model]. I currently use Adguard, but NextDNS has been recommended to me several times now.
I have already looked into NextDNS a little, but would still like to hear a few questions/opinions.
Is NextDNS open source? [I found a few places, but it's limited i guess?]
NextDNS Privacy-Policy is somehow very short and concise, without much information. What about logging? How do you handle the data? How do you deal with requests from authorities?
What kind of filter lists does NextDNS offer that sets it apart from other providers?
What is your general experience with NextDNS? Why would you recommend me to switch to NextDNS?
I can't think of any more at the moment, but I'll write them down if I do. Thank you very much for any answers, opinions and discussions.
PS: What about the current US drama caused by Trump? Will NextDNS also be affected, especially in the area of data protection? Or would you move your headquarters elsewhere first?

Only the CLI client is open source, which doesn't really do much, most of the magic sauce is in the server side. This is actually similar to AdGuard, the open source AdGuard Home is *not* the server AdGuard use for their public service, it share a lot of components but ultimately they have very different feature sets.
The Privacy Policy explicitly say that it won't log if you turn it off. So if you're worried about authorities comes knocking, turn it off. Note that even with DNS encryption your ISP generally still can see what domain you're visiting through SNI, unless you're using a VPN or the site implement ECH
NextDNS closest competitor (AdGuard freemium DNS) don't have proprietary feeds that NextDNS use, but whether those feeds actually perform better than publicly available lists is something you need to test yourself. FWIW, the publicly available Hagezi and OISD usually work well enough for most people.
If you're already using AdGuard right now, I don't think you need to move to NextDNS. Both generally work just fine in my region.
NextDNS founders also run dns0.eu as a separate entity, if you're worried about American government, pick that. Note that while AdGuard officially is a Cypriot company, the founder and owner still live in Russia.
If you're really worried about American government, note that DNS encryption alone won't hide you if you're an American (due to SNI), and even with a VPN, sites can still track you through your browser fingerprint. You likely want Tor instead, but you must change your entire internet habit, there's no point on using Tor but still keeping your previous accounts.
