FireFox slow DNS resolution time

Hi there,

I need to necro this issue: https://help.nextdns.io/t/m1hg3q3/for-some-reason-nextdns-website-is-taking-20-30-seconds-to-load-for-me-but-only-when-i-use-dns-over-https-in-firefox

I'm experiencing the exact same problem.

I have NextDNS configured as so:

Router DHCP > Pihole > Stubby Container (DOT) > NextDNS.

Every device on my network uses the above, so all devices route their DNS through Nextdns. This is working on:

Ubuntu 22.04 Desktop with Firefox.

Ubuntu 22.04 Laptop with Firefox.

iPhone 14 pro max with Safari

However, when using Firefox on my macbook I have extremely long DNS resolution times, sometimes 30+ seconds. It manifests exactly the same was as the user describes in that old thread.

Changing my Pihole upstream from Stubby (Which ultimately goes to nextdns) to quad9 fixes the issue. I've already tried a new profile in Firefox and a clean install, which didn't fix it.

Safari/Chrome/Orion browsers all work fine using NextDNS. The issue is purely with Firefox.

Any advice or anything I can provide to help with investigating this please let me know as this is a massive pain for me.

Thanks!

I should also add that doing a manual `dig` against the domains that have slow DNS resolution time in Firefox shows them responding immediately. So the issue isn't with the network stack of the Mac itself. (Otherwise other browsers would suffer too, but they dont)

Update: Forcing DOH in Firefox in the browsers settings seems to get around the problem.

While it's nice that this is fixed, I'm still not sure why DOT was a problem specifically for FF on a mac, but DOH works absolutely fine?
