1st time setup (IPv6) questions

I've got a newish Asus router (AX58U), 1st time NextDNS user.  I figured it's easiest to just setup at the router level since we have so many devices.  IPv6 was disabled, so I turned that on(native, not passthrough) and put the IPv6 DNS servers in.  Then the NextDNS setup page was showing IPv6 enabled at the router, but I was still not using NextDNS until I added (45.90.28.242) to the WAN settings.  Is that correct, or am I missing something?  I thought all I would need was the IPv6 string.

Also, I noticed there's several apps and configs for each device.  Is there any advantage to using those?  Or should it all work fine if setup at the router?

    I'm going to amend my setup question with more data, and hopefully someone can explain it to me.  First, I went over 300,000 within a day.  But I guess that's what happens when it's on the router which has a couple of IoT devices.  It looks like my Lennox T-stat makes a query once per minute, but my myQ garage door opener makes one every 3 seconds!

    That aside, my stats seem pretty skewed. Though the myQ is 2nd only to root domain *.nextdns.io, which is well over 2,000,000 in a day. The resolved domains show variants of string-ID.test.nextdns.io.  Can anyone explain why I see that as a vast majority of all queries?  Is my router not set up correctly?  I'm using the stock Asus firmware.

      Dave E apps are useful for when you are on the go and still want to benefit from nextdns. I know going outside is a strange concept those days, but hopefully this will be useful again sometime.

      Seems like your setup resulted in having all your devices going straight to nextdns. You might want to try to setup the dns ip on the WAN interface instead of the LAN one, so your devices are still using the DNS forwarder/cache of your router.

      A better option would be to use our CLI (https://nextdns.io/cli), but you need to install a custom firmware like ASUS Merlin.

      The xxx.test.nextdns.io entries are from the setup page. They should not dominate your analytics, but they are often in the last entries in the logs tab when you visit my.nextdns.io for obvious reasons.

    I did a glance over of the AX58U user guide and it seems to only allow for a singular DNS server and a singular WINS server. Most consumer routers with stock firmware only allow ipv4 dns entries. Another thing is your ISP might not be ipv6 compatible since ipv4 is still the widely used ip standard. If your router doesn't allow a ipv6 dns entry then you will have to link your ip and enter one of your Next ipv4 dns entries via your routers web interface instead. As for the apps, they're meant to be for device specific NextDns usage and/or usage outside your home network. Since you have IoT devices and are using the free plan, it would probably be best to test on a single device or two first since IoT devices will be doing  persistent querying that will drive you to your limit pretty quickly

    Thanks for all the replies.

    I bet the issue with xxx.test.nextdns.io are from having the setup page open on my PC for the day. It absolutely dominated analytics and I don't see a way to reset that.

    It seems I am using NextDNS correctly, the setup page is green.  I believe my ISP is IPv6 ready, it seems to pass site tests.  Router was set up using WAN.  There's a separate IPv6 DNS server, and I just now tried leaving the IPv4 ones blank and now I'm seeing more IPv6 numbers in the logs.
