NextDNS installer what does it do within Windows?

Hi, 

I just want to know what does the Installer do for windows PC?

It will tag the windows PC with my NextDNS ID number?

When check:  test.nextdns.io

I can see my "deviceName" is identified with the actual host name of my PC

But when I stopped the installer (not running) and checked back again: test.nextdns.io

I cannot find the "deviceName" listed.

Does the installer install CA root cert into  Windows?

    For the name part, if you choose the option to report device name on the settings it'll report your devices name so it can be identified on the settings, you also provide the app with your NextDNS configuration ID so it connects to your configuration.

    From what I know it doesn't use a CA cert as it doesn't need to see or modify and requests beyond DNS and from the past posts by NextDNS it configures the Windows settings and gets the encrypted DNS running without the headache of manually setting it up.

       If I install "NextDNS for Windows" on my PC and I change the Windows' DNS setting and it points to Google DNS server = 8.8.8.8. What is going to happen? 

      Effectively the Chrome web browser in Windows which is using secure DNS (DOH) by default, will forward the DNS query to Google DNS server? correct?

      Regarding about NextDNS Root CA:

      What is going to happen: (A) if the Root CA is install (B) if the Root CA is not install?

      Wepee For Chrome/Firefox and other browsers by default they go with the DNS that's set on the device so NextDNS would be it unless you change it.

      For the CA cert, it's used modify the actual traffic and it's used to display the NextDNS Blockage, I don't personally use it as it could cause issues with some specific sites (their anti-adblocker mechanism) but you could use it if you'd like the users to know why exactly a site is blocked.

      For what would happen if you were to change the DNS on the network driver, I'm not sure as I hadn't done it personally and my laptop is currently in repair so can't test and tell you. But NextDNS will override VPN's DNS services unless it's Hotspot Shield where they somehow bypass the built in DNS even on Android with Private DNS so my guess would be that NextDNS would still be active but can't be sure.
