NextDNS got abandoned?

I would like to know if the owners of NextDNS will continue to release updates to NextDNS.
If you know the answer, please let me know! Many thanks! :)

I noticed the format of the logs has changed recently

ohh, the NextDNS logs. I was thinking about the community forum somehow. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Actually, I meant NextDNS itself. Not the community.

Is there anyone who knows if they will continue releasing updates including new features? I mean, the last update where they released some new features was about a year ago or longer… (I don’t know for sure, I’m kind of new to NextDNS.) Anyone else noticing the lack of updates? I use NextDNS on a daily basis, so I can’t just choose a different DNS just because they quit releasing (maintenance) updates.

Any new feature is carefully evaluated in terms of the complexity it may add to the user experience and its maintenance costs, and none have met the criteria for inclusion recently. We occasionally make UI adjustments as needed. The backend services are regularly maintained with routine releases focused on security and performance; the most recent update was deployed across the entire fleet last week. Additionally, we continue to improve our network and backend services. For instance, a few months ago, we migrated to a new storage backend for logs and analytics, which has improved responsiveness by approximately 10x.

Okay, thank you for your reply. But how about the iOS app? It hasn’t been updated in years… Says AppStore. And now iOS 18.1 released, it’s going to need a new update. For the app to run properly and smoothly. Right? :)

Apple won’t let us update the app without adding in-app purchases, which doesn’t make sense for us. As anyone who has tried arguing with Apple’s app validation team knows, it’s a losing battle. That’s why we recommend using the mobile configurations instead.

Really?  There are plenty of free apps.   Also, I’ve seen free apps with “in app purchases” that are merely voluntary tips.  Maybe that’s a way around Apple's rule.   Having said all that, I use the app rather than the mobile config for one reason:  it’s easy to quickly toggle off on occasion when I don’t want to spend any time looking through logs and adding entries to the Allow list.    If you ever do update the app, please make it possible to add a “temporary disable” like 30 seconds.   Thanks

I can tell it is much quicker.  Even dnscheck.tools is reporting about 20-30 ms less than what I was getting before.

      Please consider these reasonable requests:

      1. Bulk upload of allow/deny lists (CSV format)
      2. Ability to sort allow/deny lists alphabetically
      3. Universal allow/deny lists (or ability to use multiple profiles to prevent duplication) — i.e., have a master allow/deny list with ability for new profiles to also use the universal allow/deny list
      4. Ability to block IP addresses by region (not just TLD) - (i.e., block specific countries)
      5. Block newly registered domains <30 days by more granularity (i.e., block those less than 3 days or 7 days old)
      6. Block pages with ability to bypass the block by entering a password
      7. Ability to use multiple DDNS for users who have WAN failover with second WAN connections (i.e., list 2-3 WAN IPs to associate with accounts

#1 & #2 should not affect performance at all, but would be a huge help with those that maintain their own deny/allow lists.  #3 would allow a universal allow/deny list across all profiles.

#4 is an absolute must.  Currently, I'm using my router to block this.  However, it would be nice if this was blocked by NextDNS for mobile profiles.

#5 should have an option to allow blocks for <7 days in addition to <30 days.  Should not be overly troubling to implement and should not affect performance.

      Thanks!

but you can toggle also with the mobileconfig? just switch to default and start using the default option, personally I miss the point here of the app, which is an app if you understand what I mean.

I don’t see how you switch to default when using mobileconfig.   Unless you mean going into the settings app and choosing a different configuration, which would be even clumsier.

im not sure what you mean about having an app.   The current app works fine, even if it hasn’t been updated in awhile.   What updates are you looking for?  Almost all configuration is done on the server.

Maybe I’ll have to contact them to find out. I don’t think anyone knows the answer to my questions. Even though it wasn’t the answer I was looking for, thanks for replying to me Calvin Hobbes. It helped me a lot since they don’t have an update log which they do need…!

to the users it doesn’t appear there’s much going on.   I believe they are working quietly on the backend.  Outages are practically non existent.   The client parts are minimalist.   Most of the features happen on the servers.   I’ve been using them since the very beginning and have no plans to leave.     There’s a handful of front end features that would be nice to have but nothing critical.
