[Issue] Reddit Doesn't Load When Using Private DNS with NextDNS on Samsung S23

I've been facing an issue where Reddit doesn't load when I have Private DNS enabled on my Samsung Galaxy S23 with NextDNS. Reddit works perfectly fine if I either disable Private DNS or use a VPN with Private DNS enabled. Additionally, Reddit works fine with other DNS providers under Private DNS.

Troubleshooting Steps Taken:

  1. Changed Blocklists: I've tried different blocklists:

    • HaGeZi - Multi Pro
    • NextDNS Blocklist
    • OISD Blocklist I've also attempted removing all blocklists altogether, but the issue persists.
  2. Allowlisting Reddit: I've added reddit.com to the allowlist. All Reddit requests either show a green line (due to the allowlist) or are being allowed by default. As far as I understand, the allowlist should take precedence over any blocklist.

  3. Checked Logs: The logs show that none of Reddit's requests are being blocked. Regardless, I have allowed reddit.com in the allowlist just to be sure.

  4. Parental Controls: All parental controls are disabled.

  5. Profile Settings: I've tried deleting my NextDNS profile and using the default one, but this hasn’t resolved the issue either.

  6. Device-Specific Issue?: The same DNS configuration works perfectly on my PC. The issue only occurs on my Samsung Galaxy S23. This suggests it may be a device-specific problem, but I can't pinpoint the cause.

  7. Reddit Notifications: Oddly enough, Reddit notifications come through, and when I click on them, the post loads. However, the comments never load.

Working Configurations:

  • Reddit loads properly when I:
    • Turn off Private DNS.
    • Use a VPN with Private DNS enabled.
    • Use other DNS providers in the Private DNS option.

Conclusion: Despite making sure Reddit isn't blocked and having it allowlisted, the problem persists. It’s only affecting my Samsung S23, not my PC, with the same NextDNS configuration.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

Device Details:

  • Phone: Samsung Galaxy S23
  • NextDNS Profile: Using HaGeZi - Multi Pro blocklist (also tried NextDNS and OISD)
  • Private DNS: Enabled with NextDNS
  • Issue Reproduction: Consistently happens with the Reddit app and Reddit website.

Since it works when a VPN is enabled on the phone, it's possible that the NextDNS node serving your region got an invalid cache (perhaps Fastly is doing maintenance, and your local node happened to fetch the record at that time), normally this should resolve itself after a while. Your PC will use DoH (either with native Windows 11 support or the NextDNS app), which sometimes serves differently from DoT. Try using Intra to load your DoH address in Android.
