Proton VPN

Is it normal that Proton VPN (Free version) isn't bypassing NDNS? I thought any VPN would bypass any type of filtering? I love the fact that it's not bypassing BTW.

It depends on how you setup NextDNS and Proton. If Proton is set as non-kernel WireGuard in Android for example, Private DNS setting still takes precedence, and if you setup NextDNS in the browser, it will override any VPN.

      Martheen It must be.

      EDIT:

Which setting is the best to work with NDNS?

Auto is fine, it would adjust to what is available on your current network. Basically it's trivial for ISP and network admin to block WireGuard and OpenVPN UDP since UDP traffic isn't essential, blocking the TCP port for WireGuard and OpenVPN is also possible with DPI, while blocking the Stealth protocol is more complicated without whitelisting or statistic log.

On the other hand, TCP for VPN is less optimized in terms of latency & traffic overhead, Stealth likely is even worse since not only it's TCP, but it attempts to masquerade as TLS traffic.

So basically leave it on auto and it will continue to work perfectly alongside NDNS?

Yeah, things may change if your ROM get an upgrade to use WireGuard kernel version which in some config override Private DNS setting, but for now just keep it that way.
