DNS resolver reverts to ISP after 1-2 days

My linked IP doesn't ever change, no settings in my router change, it just randomly stops using NextDNS as the DNS resolver and reverts to the ISP. I have a Motorola Modem that allows for IPv6 and IPv4, but I set it to use IPv4 only and refer to the NextDNS routers.

To fix it I go in and change it to dual mode (IPv4 & IPv6), save, then change it back to IPv4 only and save. Then it works again for a couple of hours or up to a couple of days until it reverts back to the ISP again. Not sure if I have my modem configured wrong, or if somehow the ISP is overriding? Any help would be appreciated.

    Mini update: all I have to do to restore NextDNS is reboot the modem. I'd still like to not have to do that every day or two...

      David So the settings automatically change in the router itself.

      To me this sounds like a router firmware issue. I've never experienced such behavior

      Is this one of those modem/router combo boxes? You know, the unit ISP give costumers that serves as the modem and the router at the same time? If so, perhaps this is their way of ensuring costumers are using their DNS servers? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      I myself have always preferred a dumb modem (ISPs offer a list of supported modems) to which I then attach my router of choice.

      Either way, look up your device model on the internet for issues and/or contact your ISP support directly or their community forums if they have any. See what other people are saying about said motorola device.

    Thanks so much for the reply. The settings do not change, but they seem to be overridden. When I go in and look at the config, nothing has changed. But I am off the NextDNS server and back to the ISP. The only way I know is by looking on the Setup page or trying to access a restricted site. 

    I bought my own cable modem so I wouldn't have to deal with the ISP's hardware.
