DNS Queries to Ad Servers – Despite uBlock Origin

Hello!

I wonder why there are ad-server DNS queries in my NextDNS logs. My Firefox and LibreWolf browsers both have uBlock Origin enabled. All default uBlock filters are active (including Peter Lowe's one).

With both of my browsers, I was able to reproduce this directly, where I copy and paste an ad-server URL from Peter Lowe's filter list in my tab. The URL gets promptly denied from opening with uBlock. So far, so good. But the ad-server DNS query somehow gets through and shows up in the NextDNS log.

Firefox may be wrongly configured, as for example, many privacy-hardened settings are not enabled by default. uBlock also has many more advanced settings. I checked each one in Firefox, they were manually enabled by myself, in LibreWolf they were enabled by default.

To make it more difficult, not every blocked ad etc. seems to request a DNS query. This URL is by far the biggest offender in my NextDNS logs:

securepubads.g.doubleclick.net

Has anyone an idea why those DNS queries in this case go through?

My Specs:

  • Win 11 Pro, everything up-to-date, Win Defender only
  • NextDNS is manually added in Win 11 Network Settings (both IPv4 + IPv6, with identifier)
  • NextDNS is also in Fritz.Box router added (both IPv4 + IPv6)
  • Connection is Ethernet only

This seems similar to issue #2913 in uBO repo, and discussed as Bug 1861889 in Mozilla's bugzilla. The reason people notice this with NextDNS is because they can see the log, the bug likely happen on any providers.
