vpn or vpn + custom dns server

Hello,

I use a PC running linux. (Fedora 40) I also use Librewolf as a web browser and MullvadVPN as a vpn as well as a dns content blocker. However, Mullvadvpn allows you to choose a custom DNS server.
So, in order to improve my security and privacy when I go online, I tried to install Nextdns but couldn't.
In fact, to install Nextdns, I didn't know if I had to modify my PC's network settings, then modify the settings of my Mullvad VPN and finally modify the settings of my Librewolf browser?
So I decided not to install a custom dns server but to use the one provided by my vpn.
I'm contacting you because I'm wondering if it's useful to use a custom dns server to improve my security and privacy when I'm on the Internet?
I asked MullvadVPN and they recommend (impartially...or not...?) to use the vpn dns server.

In short, could you tell me (as impartially as possible) if I should only use Mullvad's DNS server as recommended or if using a custom DNS server in addition to the VPN would give me even more security?

    If a DNS server is set in your browser, it will override the VPN setting. The VPN DNS setting typically will override your OS setting.

    If you use the Mullvad DNS server while using their VPN, effectively only one party gets your full traffic, Mullvad. If you use NextDNS, then NextDNS and Mullvad know what server you're visiting (even though Mullvad doesn't see your DNS queries, they still see what IP you're visiting and unless the site implements ECH they still also see what domain you're visiting through the plaintext SNI)

    Mullvad DNS server is usually fine for basic adblocking, if you want logging and customizability then you'll want NextDNS.
