New Idea: Custom Blocklists

Allow users to import custom blocklists from a git repo in the standard format. This would alleviate a lot o the gripes people have, allow them to subscribe to more expansive lists (or create their on), and generally be a win-win for both NextDNS and its users.

Dev NextDNS has announced it will no longer support custom blocklists https://help.nextdns.io/t/q6hmva4/custom-blocklist-support

I hadn’t seen that. This sucks. They really need to enable this feature again so that people don’t have to run both a PiHole/AdGuard Home server and NextDNS. It’s absurd that I can’t block what I want. I’m sure most users would rather be able to block what they want and deal with the pain of overblocking versus just having the feature not exist.

It was never an option.   It has been this way since the beginning

That reply would make some sense if the included lists were higher quality and didnt have lists abandoned 5 years ago.

They made that announcement 4 years ago, unfortunately ignoring the many, many times this keeps getting requested by many users. That 4 year old announcement assumes we want to upload our lists for everyone to use, which is not the case being made by many of us. All we are asking is to allow us to use our own custom lists on our personal account only. This way we can share our personalized filters with friends, family, and mobile devices. If we introduce false positives, nobody else should be affected but only those using our personalized NextDNS link.

Considering the fact that NextDNS includes so many obsolete lists, some of which haven't been updated in years, yet doesn't consider this popular common-sense request, makes no sense to me.

There is no cloud DNS service that offers this. That would also be almost impossible and would exceed the server capacities. Imagine millions of users uploading their own lists ...

Set up your own server in your home network or use a VPS for this.

Otherwise, there are other services that are also being further developed and where not all areas are outdated. Here it seems that the service is only being kept alive, there is nothing new or feedback here.

Then they should verify more lists to choose form. I need a larger game list to block for my homeschool kids. some thing like this from github. it was created for schools.

that list uses URLs.   DNS can only block FQDNs.   You’ll need to find a browser based blocker to use that list.  Or send your kids to a public school
