Using NextDNS with ProtonVPN on Linux

I was having issues getting NextDNS and ProtonVPN to work together, so I'm sharing this hoping it can help someone else.  I am running Linux Mint 21.2 Cinnamon.

I want to have NextDNS always on, even when I'm not connected to a VPN.  Initially I configured NextDNS using the recommended setup (editing the /etc/systemd/resolved.conf file). When I connected to ProtonVPN I had no internet connection. The solution that worked for me was undoing the changes I made to the resolved.conf file, then changing the DNS in network settings under IPv4 and IPv6 - see the screenshot. Replace 0.0.0.0 with the addresses listed under your NextDNS setup page.

I'm on linux mint 21.2 Cinnamon, too. If I do as you suggest, does this mean that I have to edit every wifi network I join?

Is there no way to get Linux Mint to use my NextDNS addressesses for all current and future wifi networks?

I have been editing every network. I was concerned about this too, but there are only two networks that I use regularly so it hasn't been a burden for me. If you enter your NextDNS settings within your browser, then at least all of your internet searches will route through NextDNS regardless of what network you are on. Let me know if you've had any new discoveries. I haven't tried changing my setup since I first posted this.
