linked ip

i'm wondering why a linked ip is needed if the nextdns server ip addresses can be configured inside ms windows and a router configuration?

    So that NextDNS knows it’s you and can offer you the setup you configured?

      Rob actually, this can be done by the IP of the nameservers only - but i don't know if is reliable enough. Every nameserver appears to be different from configuration to configuration.

      If you use the NextDNS apps, they will always sync up with your account, and you can even see the IPs used in the Analytics.

      But yeah, link the IP or use the apps is always better of course. To have the configuration applied.

     I’m not sure I understand.

    Wouldn’t that mean NextDNS needs an enormous amount of IP addresses?

      Rob thats why i stated that i don't know if is reliable... despite the nameservers being in different IPs, NextDNS have a finite amount of them to use - and sure, they will duplicate among users.
      But i have multiple IPs in the logs that i have used in the past, and i don't think they are with NextDNS apps installed. Maybe they are...
       

      Never less, link the IP is needed to NextDNS "know" that you are related with that account/configuration

    Most routers have an option to have DDNS / Dynamic DNS, that automatically syncs your IP on the Router, setting it up your router with DDNS should give you hastle free IP syncing. Using the Windows App also has the same results and is extremely useful for Laptops. On Linux and Apple devices there are clients so you're basically covered in every aspect.

    As for instructions, setup the DDNS I use my routers own DDNS service, get the domain and put it on your NextDNS account, it's in the same page where you link your IP just press button to expand the tab below the Sync button. Paste the Dynamic DNS domain to there and save the settings. That's it, now your Router syncs with NextDNS and reports IP changes.

    I think linked IP is only needed if you’re using unencrypted UDP 53.

    I don’t think you need to link IP if you’re using the client or DOH or DOT.  

    I never link mine…I just checked and my ip had changed from what was shown at my.NextDNS.io but everything was working fine.

      Calvin Hobbes With DOH/DOT there is the subdomain linked with your configuration, it can be because of that. :)
