How can I "merge" (identical) devices?

Somehow my logs show several (mobile) devices twice, under different names:

(I have 1 iPhone, 1 iPad, and 1 MacBook Air)

 How can I fix this?

My setup:

  • NextDNS CLI on router at home
  • NextDNS configured in the DNS Encryption feature of Little Snitch 6 on Mac (disabled at home, to use NextDNS on router)
  • NextDNS app on iPhone/iPad (disabled at home, to use NextDNS on router)

Related: how does NextDNS identify devices?

Considering Apple’s privacy measures (randomized MAC addresses), I could image NextDNS uses the IP address instead on iPhone/iPad, which might explain the observed behavior.

That does not explain Mac though, because this privacy feature will be introduced on macOS Sequoia in the fall (as far as I know).

A given device configured with DNS encryption will get a different id from a device connecting via a router running the CLI. This is due to how those id are generated. There is no way to get a consistent id between those two modes of connection.
