  rewrites accepts domains as a target, but it doesn’t seem to work. I had figured it would act as a cname. Rewrites works fine when the target is an IP address

  using a name as rewrite will create a CNAME as you said. A CNAME is not a HTTP rewrite, it won’t redirect you browser to the target domain.

Private DNS Automatic on my Android version 12 phone I changed it to 311a59.dns.nextdns.io and it works for blocking advertising and I feel speeds my phone up when going on line! This is all I know about the DNS code I hope this will help you.
