NextDNS blocking access to Google Play Store in 2024??

So I've searched on here and Google. Every time I connect to NextDNS, I cannot download or update apps via the Google Play Store. In fact, when I load up the Play Store, it shows an error message saying cannot connect. I'm using a Google Pixel 8 phone with the most recent Android and Play Store updates available for this device. 

My current workaround is to disconnect from NextDNS and then update/download apps. Once finished, reconnect to NextDNS. 

As I said, I looked up many topics on this issue and the proposed solutions did not work. Does anyone know a solution to this problem? Thank you very much.

    Check the logs, what is being blocked when you encounter the issue.

    See if you have gvt1.com blocked, if it is add it to the Allowlist or disable the list is blocking it.

    I've done both these suggestions. I allowed googleapi google-analytics and gvt1. Still not able to fetch updates or download new apps from the Google play store. Is it just my phone ? Lol

      On the logs, see what filter lists are blocking google domains. And turn these lists off.

      I use agresive filter lists like Hagezi Pro++ and OISD and I still am able to access the google play store. No update issues etc.

      Do go over you filter lists, as well as, the services that you have blocked.

      Out of the blue, if you are forcing the safe youtube setting, try to turn that off and test it out. I don't know if this setting can cause issues with the play store but I do have run into other google services related issues in the past because of allowing  it. Once turned off and some handle jiggling everything worked fine.

       

      So yeah, check logs for which filter list is blocking google domains

      If you are a the point of pulling hair, uncheck all them filter lists and start over. I recommend NextDNS' own, Hagezi Normal (you can work your way up per your needs later) and go over the services you are blocking under Parental Controls.

       ok so I did some research. My phone is managed by my work. Everytime I change my private DNS to NextDNS, I get this popup saying "Network has no Internet access. Private DNS server cannot be accessed." yet everything works fine so I just clear the notification and go about using my phone as regular. It seems that Android users, especially those using Google Pixel phones, and whose phones are being managed by their work all have this problem. 

      I check the logs before, during, and after trying to use the Google Play Store. There is nothing being blocked. Google and GoogleAPI aren't shown as being blocked. That's all that's being shown in the logs when I try to use the Play Store. I've tried force stopping the Play Store app as well as clearing its cache. 

      I believe the problem lies somewhere with having my phone managed by my work. I know the administrator I spoke with says there's nothing being blocked or rerouted on their end. So that's all I can come up with. I would test on another Android or Google Pixel that is not being managed by an organization but everyone I know either uses Apple or Samsung. And of those few who I asked to download NextDNS and try it out, they are not having any issues whatsoever. So yeah I think it might be a mix of having your phone managed by your company and/or Google Pixel phones. 

      Although I will try your recommendations and see if that does remedy anything. Thank you for your reply.

    Same here. No matter what I "Allow", I still can't connect. I have to change to Private DNS then clear N-DNS cache, before I can get any updates. For me it never went through.

      yeah I mean it's not the end of the world but it's annoying to update / download new apps.

    Seems like Gaming category is blocking `play google.com`. After removing it from parental control tab, play store started working for me.

    Currently, I'm manually blocking all gaming sites through denylist, since I can't seem to use gaming category, because play store has games too.

      Seems like whitelisting `play.google.com` through allowlist and blocking gaming category also seem to work too.
