This device is not using NextDNS

I have NextDNS configured on my router directly (IPv4 and IPv6). When I log into my NextDNS account from my phone (iPhone 14, no internet relay enabled), it tells me I’m not using NextDNS.

If I install the configuration profile for iPhone, it works fine.

I expected the configuration on the router would be sufficient, but that doesn’t appear to be the case - does anyone know why? I did a dns leak test and I got a bunch of Google servers; I redid the test in a private browser session and got Cloudflare servers.

test.NextDNS.io gives these results without a configuration profile installed on the device (but everything configured on the router):

{
"status": "unconfigured",
"resolver": "172.217.36.194",
"ecs": "2600:1700:3949:1100::/56/0",
"srcIP": "2600:1700:3949:114f:7d6b:797c:c12:a43e",
"server": "vultr-mia-1"
}

    Anyone got suggestions to help with this? Trying to understand why my iPhone requires the profile to be installed when my router is configured already.

       I’d rather not have to use anything - the profile works fine, the problem is that NextDNS says I’m not using anything when I remove the profile, even though NextDNS is configured on my router…

       the system can't recognize a device when it doesn't have the app or a profile installed

       I don’t mind not being able to identify the device on the network - the issue still remains that without the profile (or app) on my phone, my traffic isn’t going through NextDNS configuration on my router - and I wouldn’t expect that to occur?

    So, the iPhone works correctly if you've installed the config file, right? If you remove it, what happens? Same results as the computer? To me, it sounds like something is either misconfigured on the router or on the browser (perhaps try another browser; I'd do a fresh install of one you don't use so the settings are vanilla).

       That's correct - the profile works, removing the profile and NextDNS' dashboard says I am not protected when viewing it from my iPhone; even though the router has config on it  too.

      The router config works fine for other devices on my network when I view the NextDNS dashboard, just my iPhone that isn't playing nice for some reason. I did try it on Safari (normal & private with no addons enabled) and got the same results. I'll try with another browser app and see what that does!

      GeordieIf you have Private Relay or something else on the device that would be either a VPN or a service that overrides the router DNS that could be the reason behind the issue.

      Also fyi, on the router if you have a dynamic IP that changes every now and then, I'd advise that you use DDNS and enter the DDNS address to NextDNS as it would update the IP that's configured with the DNS.

       Private Relay isn't on, and no other VPN is configured. I don't have a DDNS provider, but we have a static IP anyway. Like I say, works fine for other devices the way the router is configured.

      Then it could be an iOS specific issue as I have a router setup for NextDNS using an Android device, for me I generally keep Private DNS on as I don't want to get ads while using my mobile data and I'd also recommend using the configuration profile but I do have a Dynamic IP and I have that synced through TP-Links DDNS (the modems) and even have a different brand router with better hardware and with all of those hoops it works flawlessly. Hopefully it gets fixed but could be a wired issue with iOS as on Android I've been using it just fine and you're saying that it's also fine on your other devices.
