MacOS + NextDNS app suddenly stopped using my profile

I am a longtime and happy NextDNS customer. We use a variety of profiles in our household, mostly for parental controls. I use the NextDNS app on Big Sur. For some reason, when I returned from work today my machine is using the wrong profile. It is using our default profile via Linked IP (heavily filtered) instead of my custom profile via VPN. On my.nextdns.io I get the dreaded "This device is using NextDNS with another configuration" message.

I don't think I changed anything, it just broke for some reason.

Things I've tried:

  • verified that the NextDNS app is running and has the proper config id
  • verified that the config is working from another device (my phone)
  • verified that NextDNS VPN looks correct in System Prefs and is using the proper config id
  • rebooted machine

    I have verified that this issue is occurring on two unrelated machines. I suspect a NextDNS outage.

    I forced an update from the App Store and that fixed it! Thank you
