Leaving for Adguard

Greetings. I've been a long time user of NextDNS, and have decided that due to lack of new features, as well as zero feedback on bug reports, that this project is all but dead. I haven't seen any new features in well over a year, and the proxy app for Windows machines is an absolute joke compared to the competition.

I hope the developers are paying attention, b/c they have made a masterclass on how to lose customers: Zero innovation. Adguard is leaps and bounds better, and allows configuring separate DNS servers (NextDNS would call these "configuration profiles" but it's a much weaker concept in NDNS) and has much better reporting. It also supports QUIC, and is the only vendor to do so.

While NextDNS is a quality product, due to lack of new development and zero input on glaring bugs, you've shown you aren't listening to your customers. I can no longer recommend this service in good faith as well. I am a developer of over 20 years, and am baffled as to what work is actually being done on this product. So long.

    It's been mentioned that NextDNS is in maintenance mode, which means they keep it working without improving. Also, it's true that there's only so much you can do in a DNS service.

    Some people also mentioned that there was some unacknowledged downtime recently (even though I didn't notice).

    They do reply here and there on the forum.

    DDNS link has been broken for about a month and a half at this point, and they don't reply to these particular reports.

    It works, and they have servers in my location so ping is better than some competitor.

    I do wish they kept adding features like notes for whitelists and blacklists to keep track of what's added in there. There's an extension for that, but it doesn't sync to the account.

       again DDNS is not broken. If you have an issue, reset the domain in the UI *from the same network as the DDNS domain* to fix it.

      I tried resetting it, and I tried setting the DDNS while on my network, while the current IP is the one the DDNS is pointing to. NextDNS updates only at the moment of manually setting it, but then does not update every minute. Please try that, it does not work. So many people can't be wrong.

      Please have a glance over the posts and comments, as tens of people are experiencing the same issue.

      For instance, this post (https://help.nextdns.io/t/h7ytskq) says "If I remove and re-add the domain name in setup page, then it updates to the correct one.
      So seems like the schedule is broken, not that it can't actually see the correct IP."

      This comment (https://help.nextdns.io/t/h7ytskq?r=x2yt46m) also says that it works if you manually re-add the DDNS.

      This is exactly the problem. There's an illusion of it working because it indeed works once after setting it, but then does not update every minute as described.

      I really haven't noticed, but maybe this could help you see if there could be an issue, potentially around the mentioned time.

       there is a lot of misinformation about our service with hidden advertising for some competitors. We remove some of it, but it is not always enough.

      DDNS is sometime misused by people using it on their mobile or laptop instead of a mobile configuration or a client. DDNS is meant to be used on a router that never switches network. Our system will refused a DDNS with an IP that switches between different ISP for instance. This is a security measure.

      Potential hidden advertising could be possible. Perhaps, you could consider adding a status page to fight false information.

      My IP does not switch different ISPs. DDNS used to work perfectly fine roughly 1.5 months ago, and there are a lot of people experiencing this problem recently. The sudden flow of reports specifically about this part of NextDNS indicates that something is indeed wrong, as you can't find recent reports older than about 1.5 months, since it appears that it had been working well for a long time, as expected. Please have it checked, as there really is an illusion of it working because it indeed updates perfectly fine when you set it up, but only once, and then never updates every minute, even if you set it up within the network.

      Also, I noticed that NextDNS is able to detect the IP, through this link: https://dns.nextdns.io/YourID?name=YourDDNS&type=A (found somewhere on the forum)

      It just does not apply it on the profile.

      In addition, this user (https://www.reddit.com/r/nextdns/comments/1ghpv0s/comment/lv0l19s) mentioned that DDNS update works on a similar service to NextDNS, which could contribute to the possibility that something is currently wrong on NextDNS. Note that the OP also said that they have been using DDNS linking for a long time, and it's only recently that it stopped working.

      Please check this and let NextDNS be the best service of its kind.

       I can confirm there's nothing wrong with DDNS or any other NextDNS feature. People are complaining without the full knowledge on how to set the things inside their equipment. Some basic research on YouTube can help people on make these corrections.

      Have you tried changing your IP and waiting for NextDNS to pull the update from the DDNS?

      It only updates at the moment of setting it up. I did nothing wrong, I set it from my network, no VPN, while the DDNS is already pointing to my IP, NextDNS can see that the DDNS is pointing to my IP, it does not update every minute.

       

      It used to work for many people as there's a sudden increase in reports regarding that very particular feature.

    After seeing this post and reading the comments, I felt compelled to create an account just to support the developer of NextDNS. It's truly pathetic how competitors use strategies to try to damage a serious and solid product like this. Many comments are obviously generated by bots. I have been using it for years and it is what a product should be: simple and effective for its intended purpose. It works almost perfectly. It clearly reflects the class and quality of the product that the competitors have to offer.
