Samsung Smart TV stopped logging anything

Hi all,

Just started using NextDNS, which I want to use for my Samsung Smart TV.

First, here is what I did:

  1. Opened NextDNS account.
  2. Logged in from my laptop on the same network as my TV (no VPN or anything) and linked the IP address (should I do this from the TV itself instead?).
  3. Added OISD as blocklist and Samsung as native filter.
  4. Manually entered one of the two IPv4 address as the TV's DNS server.

At first, no problem, the TV worked and the logs filled in with connections, some allowed and some blocked. At some point, the TV connections failed to work, but then worked again after turning it off an back on (and maybe leaving it for a while).

But now, although the TV works, I see nothing change in the analytics or log sections; analytics numbers stay the same and no new logs appear (since a fixed moment this week-end -- during the day, when we weren't even using it).

In the TV's settings, the manually entered IP address is still the one displayed in my NextDNS dashboard. I used the TV's browser to go to test.nextdns.io and it shows a few technical lines that seem to say that all is ok.

My question, obviously: if the TV is indeed using NextDNS as its DNS server, then how come no connections are ever recorded? (either when using the TV or, as it did for a brief moment, when the TV is off/stand-by and actually still sending requests there and then).

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Has your linked IP address changed? Check in the configuration page, it should say update linked IP (or similar) if it has changed or it will be a green tick ✅ next to the IP indicating it’s ok.

Was there only one dns server to input on the TV? There’s usually at least two for most other devices.

R P M Thanks for the reply! Now that you mention it, there are two blue "update" circling arrows next to the linked IP address. So that might be it and could fix it for now.

As for a more permanent solution, I am guessing this is linked to a dynamic IP, right? If so, I am not sure what to do. In the "Show advanced options" panel, I see the place to indicate a DDNS hostname, but I do not know what to enter (and I am not sure my ISP modem (UPC Connect Box) handles DDNS to begin with).

Further down, it says "You can also programmatically update your linked IP by calling: https://link-ip.nextdns.io/[xxx]" but I am not sure what to do with that either.

      Any ideas?

Definitely sounds like you are on a dynamic IP address.

A DDNS service is something you have to sign up to elsewhere, some are free, others are paid services. It also requires a device on your network to keep it updated.

For the link update, all you need to do is visit that link and the linked IP will be updated.
If your TV has a web browser, you could set your update link as a bookmark or even open up the link after starting the browser. Maybe using the link once a day might be ok to keep things up to date.
