NextDNS android app

Hey Is there any additional benefit in using this app, instead of updating the IP in private DNS ?

Pradeep If you mean the Private DNS option on Android you shouldn't even need to update your IP as DoH/DoT don't require you manually updating your IP etc.

For the benefits, the app uses DoH while Android uses DoT. While they're both encrypted queries DoH can bypass some firewalls that block some ports, for example one of my carriers were mad enough to block the DoT port where I couldn't use Private DNS thankfully I changed my carrier and won't use them again but otherwise DoT is simpler in it's nature from what I know and there shouldn't be any differences.

I personally use Private DNS and would also recommend you using native methods as it's a part of the OS instead of an app, but it's your choice.

Gimmi Rossi Usually it DoT is completely blocked or not, I guess your ISP has issues on that front. I also have a Asus 6E router but from my experience it's completely fine, I'd say it's likely the ISP that's causing it (as you're having this issue on other providers as well.) Using the app should be fine on that end, as I've said earlier, it's a simple app that points your device to NextDNS with your configuration so it not being updated as of recently isn't an issue at least from how I see it.

From what I've seen online Android 14 is going to have DoH but they're hard coding Google/Cloudflare etc as DoH and others are exempt, so the only other way to use NextDNS device wide is through Apple or if you're fine with just the browser Chrome and Firefox (forks of both as well) have DNS options that should prevent issues as well.

The app should work fine though so hopefully it works on your end and you can enjoy a better web even if your ISP is like my old carrier.

Gimmi Rossi I could have been more descriptive yeah, hard coding from what I know is currently for Google, Cloudflare and a few others they're hard coded as DoH others are DoT, so you still get Private DNS ofc, it's just that while the OS has the capability to bypass firewalls and issues with DoH they seem to be limiting it to select providers instead of it being available for everything so it's just annoying.

For the app, it should work fine and there are a lot of other apps that enable DoH as well so you always have a choice, it's just silly on Googles end to implement a technology that's extremely useful but then limit it's use.
