BBC news videos not displaying

Hi all,

Happy user of nextdns for the last 3 mths or so. In the last month I have an issue with bbc news videos being greyed out when i select the article. If i switch off nextdns they work fine. See attached screen shot.

Any thoughts on how I can troubleshot and resolve this?

I can't reproduce playing a random video on BBC Europe via Firefox on Android using the recommended NextDNS, oisd, and 1Hosts (lite) blocklists.

Have you checked your logs for blocked domains related to their site?

could it be that I am in Australia? I will check logs and come back...

Jago Taylor I believe I've reproduced this on Android by reverse blocking.

      Try whitelisting live.bbc.co.uk

thanks Greg. I don't have anything at all with live.bbc.co.uk in my logs but I do see a1.api.bbc.co.uk being blocked. I will try to white list this to see if it helps

still not working but i will keep trying allowing potential domains to see if I can find the cause

Jago Taylor what device/browser are you reproducing the issue on?

Have tried a load of different potential domains but it is still happening. I think it must be related to me being overseas *and viewing the main/uk news site.

I'm sue others would be affected otherwise.

would it help if i cleared my logs and reproduce the error and post the log here?

Jago Taylor Still can't reproduce even when using Chrome for Windows (on my home pc) - the same domains are being served; However if I manually block open.live.bbc.co.uk then it stops the news videos from loading or being played. I don't think it necessarily has to do with where you are since you're technically outside the UK unless you're using a vpn server in the UK. There are other domains I'm not entirely sure on, such as:

      live.akamaized.net

      live.cf.md.bbci.co.uk

However, you're just getting the BBC splash screen so something else is likely going on - its like the video assets aren't loading at all, perhaps because its a work pc that maybe preconfigured with certain settings or 3rd party software that may be causing interference. You don't have to clear logs but you can try filtering your logs to "Blocked Queries Only" and then searching "bbc" before posting the log results here so we can see if there's a pattern.

Ruby Balloon  Thanks so much for helping me with this. Just to clarify, I get this issue with the following scenarios:

      1. work issued windows pc on home wifi using nextDNS running on my router (asus merlin fw) - chrome and edge tested

      2. all home computers both windows and macs on home wifi using nextDNS running on my router (asus merlin fw) - chrome and safari tested

      3. ios devices on home wifi using nextDNS running on my router (asus merlin fw) -  safari tested

      4. ios devices on cellular/mobile using nextDNS 'app' with same configID as on wifi -  safari tested

      In addition...

I can confirm that if i switch off nextdns on wifi/router then I no longer have an issue (but lots of ads)

If I switch off nextdns app on ios device on mobile network then I no longer have the issue

I have a default configuration for nextDNS - just with the standard nextdns ad blocking switched on

Something has changed in last 4-6 weeks as it did not happen when i first started using nextDNS

Do you think it is worth me setting up a new configuration ID or profile and test this?

Jago Taylor No I don't think it's worth creating a new config. Have you rebooted your asus router since you started having this issue?

Ruby Balloon yes I have. Rebuilt entire network clean a week ago and have same issue on mobile/cellular config (so totally avoiding router)

So a quick update is that it is working now (without me changing anything with my config / white lists etc)... Perhaps something has been changed/fixed behind the scenes but I'm a happy camper again

    Hello to all,

Not sure where to post my question, I decided here because of similiarities

I'm in US, using Chrome (Version 97.0.4692.71) on Widows 11 Pro (Version 21H2)

After the last update I am unable to view any videos on https://www.bbc.com/news/world

Where the video window is, all I see is some mojibake resembling the Chinese characters.

I had same issue few years back on Windows 10, but I can't recall how I had this fixed.

There is no problem while using different browsers

    TIA

Franek Kimono Its probably happening because of a heavier block list, what lists do you use exactly?

For me allowing 'fundingchoicesmessages.google.com' helped (blocked by NextDNS Ads & Trackers Blocklist)
