Windows 10 - cannot enable NextDNS. "An Error Append while trying to communicate with NextDNS Windows Service"

Suddenly I cannot enable NextDNS in Windows 10. When I do, I get the error "An Error Append while trying to communicate with NextDNS Windows Service".

I tried reinstalling the app twice.

I saw that Microsoft Defender was blocking it. However, even after adding a folder exclusion for c:\Program Files (x86)\NextDNS, I still receive the same error and cannot enable.

Windows 10 Pro (19041.985)

I also have this problem. Tried reinstalling, turned off and on again, the problem persists. Funny thing is when I reinstalled, it somehow remembered my config ID, and problem pops up like I didn't even do anything!

well yes, i added exclusion for nextdnsservice.exe and the whole folder,  for both windows defender and malwarebytes but somehow the exe gets killed instantly, also i’ve always been using this version of windows so, no idea.

I have the same problem; until the file for the NextDNS service that is being blocked by Windows Defender is submitted and cleared by Microsoft this will continue. Please submit the NextDNS Service .exe file to Microsoft as a false positive. I am going to do the same.

Please Submit the C:\Program Files (x86)\NextDNS\NextDNSService.exe file to Microsoft as a false positive (assuming default installation settings), you will prob need to exit out of the NextDNS Windows App before trying to upload the file at the following URL:

    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/filesubmission

I just submitted it as well.

Microsoft said they removed the detection of malware in the NextDNS service; follow below commands to obtain latest malware definitions.

I too was having the same issue... I tried some of the suggestions in this thread...nothing seems to have worked. I had to switch over to YogaDNS... which has been working just fine.

Actually, the good thing with YogaDNS, is that, I can setup a rule, that says for my local domain, use my router's DNS (cause it will resolve the local domain, to local IPs).... but let all the other requests go through the NextDNS servers.

    Nice.

Anthony Capone Ya, it's a decent app. Only thing I think is missing is how to easily disable and enable it like you can with the NextDNS app? Besides having to quit/reopen YogaDNS. Am I missing how to do that?

Peter B Enabling and disabling wasn't an issue for me. I need the app to stay engaged all the time. I've setup the Recreation Time ... and manually turn on/off the rec time as needed.

Having said that, I did noticed that enabling/disabling was super easy... I guess that's a pro or a con, depending on your use case. :-)

Hope they can get their app working again... but I think I'll stay with YogaDNS... the rule feature is a huge winner for me... the kids can print or access other local services without me having to setup a static host name, or change the printer to point to an IP...neither of which I wanted to do.

Anthony C How do you quickly disable/enable in YogaDNS? I'm also not seeing a "recreation time" option.

Peter B The "recreation time" option is in the dashboard for NextDNS website...under the parental control tab.

Lemme know if you need more help than that.

In my use case, sometimes the kids want me to enable Youtube during their lunch break. So, if I agree with their request, then I go into the NextDNS site, and turn off the 'timer' icon and unblock Youtube...and they're good for the lunch period....but its up to me to remember to go back in to the parental controls, and turn the timer and blocking back on, so, I set an alarm on my phone. Not the slickest solutions, but not too bad either. I can do all this from my work laptop, or my phone. Both are easy enough.

Anthony C Peter B you guys  need to: (1) go to windows security>Virus & threat protection and click on Protection history. Click on the threat quarantined and look at the file path of the NextDNS product that trigged the false positive. (2) SUBMIT THIS FILE TO MICROSOFT AS A FALSE POSTIVE

Probably C:\Program Files (x86)\NextDNS\NextDNSService.exe (assuming default installation settings), you will probably need to exit out of the NextDNS Windows App before trying to upload the file at the following URL:

      https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/wdsi/filesubmission

Microsoft will make you login with a Microsoft account (or create one) to submit a file. It should take a couple of hours for Microsoft to clear the file as a false positive. After they clear it you will need to go back to windows security and release it from quarantine and then run the commands to update you definitions and probably reboot and you will be able to run NextDNS again. Anthony C  Peter B nothing will get fixed until you guys submit the files causing the alert to Microsoft.

Trey Burdine Okay.... followed your instructions. Submitted the file to Microsoft. Now we wait... having said that, I'm pretty happy with YogaDNS...so, even if the NextDNS software is working for me, I doubt I'll go back to it...but hopefully, this submission will end up helping the NextDNS community.

Anthony C Ah sure, I thought you were referencing to a YogaDNS feature. I was looking for a simple disable feature like you can do with the NextDNS app system tray icon. Sometimes I just want to disable it temporarily to get a site or site functions to load. I'll just quit the YogaDNS app and re-open.

Hey! I have the same problem and I tried reinstalling the network adapter and even disabled the firewall, but nothing seems to work. Have you found a way to solve your issue?

Will this ever be resolved? Switching to another paid app like YogaDNS is not really a solution.

Adding the folder to list exclusion list for Virus and Threat protection does nothing to help thus I suspect the issue is not there.
