State of the iOS app

It has not seen an update since January 2021. So has it been abandoned? It seems like it but I would appreciate getting an official statement by NextDNS about this.

As long as it still works, what update do you expect?

Rob It needs some adjustments to iOS 16 so that it is sending the device name properly again, for example. Since it has last been updated, two major iOS versions have been released and I'm sure there a changes the app would benefit from.

Besides that, the app is very minimalistic and could use some new features like being able to look into the logs, easily switch and edit configurations, etc.

Michael Roesch That would be nice indeed.

However, it requires a new entitlement from Apple, which might take time to get (if at all...):

Rob It should be in the interest of NextDNS to provide an up to date app to its customers and if that required a new entitlement, they should do it.

I fixed logging after updating to iOS or iPadOS 16.x, by creating a new profile and redownloading and installing it.    Yes, it started new logs, so the analytics will start over too.  Easy Peasy

Calvin Hobbes That's the point, you had to install a profile. AFAIK it's not that easy to quickly disable NextDNS if you need to.

Michael Roesch  with the profile and app, the app toggle works just fine

Calvin Hobbes I'm not sure if I follow. When I select the DNS to be the profile, I can't use the toggle in the app because it's turned off. When I try to turn it on, it says I need to change the DNS provider to be the NextDNS app and not the profile.

Michael_Roesch  Were you able to create the profile, download it, then see the downloaded profile in settings and install it?

For anyone wondering about this as of 5/3/23....the app still works fine on iOS/iPadOS 16. The only thing is the place they tell you to go in settings needs to be updated. It's now Settings->General->VPN, DNS, & Device Management. After I toggled NextDNS there it works just fine. There is no need to download a profile.

Would love to see app get a button that opens a browser link to your logs
