iPhone OS 15 - iCloud Private relay

Does anyone tested with ICloud Private Relay when NextDNS is configured either with App or certificate?

i see NextDNS and iCould seems to be racing for DNS ?

This device is not using NextDNS.

This device is currently using ”Akamai International B.V.” as DNS resolver.

so turn off iCloud Private relay ?

Yeah pretty normal, they redirect all the traffic from safari to their relay DNS included, I don't know if it's possible to use both in the same time.

The current version is working strangely by performing two dns queries. The nextdns filtering should work but the status page will fail. Apple told us they would fix that in a future dot release.

NextDNS  Did you already test with the first 15.1 beta Apple released yesterday? Any improvement?

NextDNS Apple released iOS 15.1 RC yesterday (and will release 15.1 final on October 25).

Did they already fix NextDNS/iCloud+ compatibility in this release?

Anyone (else) able to test this?

(I do have 15.1 RC installed, but I don't have iCloud+ yet and I'm not planning to pay a small amount at every iOS/iPadOS release just to find out that it still does not work)

Rob Apple hasn't fixed it in the latest release. I mean they are shipping bugs in areas like Shortcuts that broke 40% of my 320+ shortcuts… I guess they have a lot on their plate, hoping for iOS 16 to fix things.

But as I mentioned in other comments, I have been using NextDNS and Private Relay without any issues. Filtering works perfectly and there is no noticeable lag from DNS duplication. I never used the DNS rewriting or block page features, which are the caveats NextDNS mentioned in another comment.

    How can I test this?

I installed iOS 15 RC and ran a test on dnsleaktest.com and I'm quite confused now:

    • All servers reported by that site have ISP "iCloud Private Relay"
    • But requests on that phone do show up in my.nextdns.io analytics

I thought the second item might be because I run NextDNS on my router as well, but even if I stop it there I still get analytics for that phone...

Rob current implementation duplicate all dns queries. NextDNS is used for filtering and apple relay dns for actual resolution. This is confusing and full of edge cases. Apple plans to fix that in a future dot release.

NextDNS Ah, that explains the observed behaviour. Thanks!

NextDNS (How) Will you notify us when Apple solved that?

NextDNS Any updates on this? Has Apple fixed the duplicate DNS-issue now that we are on iOS 16.2 and Ventura 13.2?

Are there some news about this? Thanks

futurama92 It's not different in the latest 15.1 beta, so I wouldn't hold my breath for this. Hopefully they will fix it before iOS 16. That said, blocking works and I had no real issues. I don't use the block page or DNS rewrites.
