AI-Driven Threat Detection - Beta

Just saw this update. Now NextDNS really lives up to it's name as "next-gen" DNS 😍

Any more info or documentation how it works? Seems it's similar to Cisco Umbrella that also collects lots of intelligence from all their sentinels on networks/servers/clients using it and feeding Talos, but is NextDNS still 100% privacy-focused as before?

Anything special we should test/notice during the Beta?

I've enabled it on my most-used configurations.

Curious if we'll see any indication of it working in the logs or analytics.

Noticed my first issue while trying the new feature.

With this enabled I now don't get to view the full youtube homepage. I get a couple of rows and then the video boxes are greyed out. Uncheck the feature and it goes back to working and I can scroll and scroll down youtube.

d c do you see domains blocked by this feature in your logs that could help us debug that?

d c No YouTube abnormalities for me, from the Android app or web page on multiple devices.

d c No issues for me using the Youtube apps (iOS/iPadOS) but when testing from Safari I also got grey boxes. When disabling Ai Threat Detection the Youtube concent popped up, so maybe that's the issue stopping the page from loading?! After that I could turn it on again. No blocked domains showed up in the logs.

d c i don’t have this issue using my ipad in ios 15 - safari. Though i do have some content blockers enabled - 1Blocker and AdGuard. Not sure if that makes any difference.

NextDNS No I didn't see anything blocked in the logs. I have tried turning it back on and now I cannot reproduce the problem. BTW this is in Chrome on Linux, and only saw it before on the homepage, not any other view. But again, now cannot reproduce the behaviour.

Once again communication from the powers that be at NextDNS fail to communicate.....come on folks! How hard can it be? You are releasing a brand new fancy sounding feature, yet FAIL to explain it in more, or any, real detail.

I have enabled this feature and I havent come across any issues thus far, but im sure we would all love to know EXACTLY what this feature does and how it does it.

Mark It's in beta so announcing it would grab a ton of users attention that might not know how to debug and debugging could be something that needs to happen because again it's a beta. Usually even if it's a beta, whatever it is, it's quite polished from all the other betas NextDNS had but announcing a new feature that could have some issues isn't the best idea by anyone especially by people who care about their quality.

@nextdns despite proprietary, is it possible to know if the AI's model is trained internally based on whatever datasets the service have, or is it continuously trained from users' DNS records who enable that feature?

It’s disappointing that none information was released about on e.g. changelog - which is 404

DynamicNotSlow It's probably a similar technology to DNSFilter an Enterprise DNS option. Their technology analyzes a webpage for what they see as phishing/illegal and malicious things. That's just a guess atm I'm doing a bit of let's call it exploration aka going on the worst adware sites I can find and made it go off a few times and just trying to understand when it goes off exactly. It's exciting tho, instead of blocking known threats were here getting threats blocked before they are known. It's genuinely exciting to have this type of tech but I need to mess around more to understand why it blocks what it blocks and they will probably explain when it's out of beta.

Experienced a different youtube issue on the Nvidia Shield; where it said i wasn't signed in even though when i click "sign in", it already showed me signed in. Attempted to turn the toggle off using my phone but then I noticed another thing, which is that this toggle doesn't appear through the Edge Browser on Android, have to use the desktop browser version to see this beta toggle

I enabled the AI feature, then I used https://www.grc.com/dns/dns.htm to test.
In the results, I noniced that they are using DNSFilter servers. Maybe they made an agreement with them to use their AI.

I don't know what's going on, doesn't seem like it has anything to do with DNS filter tho.

How much longer will this be in beta?

Will we be given the option to choose various levels of AI filtering?

That would be great. That’s funny because I was just about to suggest that in ideas until I saw your message. 😆
