Receiving Error: This device is not using NextDNS. This device is currently using ”XXXXX” as DNS resolver

Hello,

I signed up for NextDNS and changed my network to use the NextDNS IPv4 and IPv6 IP addresses for the DNS servers. For reference, I have a Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine Pro.

I see the updated DNS servers on my laptop, but when I go to the NextDNS panel, it says:

This device is not using NextDNS.

This device is currently using ”Google DNS” as DNS resolver

What am I possibly doing wrong?!

Could be a few things. Browser dns settings, system settings, apple private relay (if using iOS/macOS). And IP needs to be linked when using plain DNS IPs (IPv4).

Did anyone find a solution to this?  We're experiencing the same issue.

RPM is likely on the right track.

A UDM Pro handing out NextDNS via DHCP does not guarantee clients are actually using it anymore. Modern browsers and operating systems can bypass router-provided DNS entirely through Secure DNS/DoH, Private Relay, VPNs, or hardcoded resolvers.

Since the warning specifically says devices are using Google DNS, I’d start by checking:

    • Chrome/Edge “Use secure DNS”
    • Firefox DoH settings
    • Android Private DNS
    • Apple Private Relay
    • Any VPN/security software with DNS filtering

Also verify the WAN/public IP is still correctly linked in NextDNS if using plain IPv4 DNS servers instead of the DoT/DoH hostname methods.

Seeing queries in logs but still allowing blocked sites can happen if only part of the traffic is using NextDNS while some applications/browsers bypass it directly.
