How to choose ads- & tracking-filters

Hello from a Swedish NextDNS-user! 🇸🇪👋

It has taken some time to choose wisely among filter lists. Some of them like Energized and Lightswitch05 in all their different variations simply block way too much so that App Store and Podcaster stop working. I don’t want to white-list as a daily routine so they were discarded.

What to choose then? I think NextDNS own list is actually a great one which I think take advantage of being at a DNS-service capable of seeing more, like that pesky renaming sometimes to hide ad servers, making it more difficult to identify.

NextDNS could have been more clear about what a great filter themselves have and WHY.

I think NextDNS Blocklist belongs to the GOOD category cautious why I thought it needed a complementary list such as oisd which sometimes block what NextDNS Blocklist already has blocked, sometimes it blocks something NextDNS Blocklist missed.

What do you think? Do you share my high regards for these two blocklists?

I have everything else in security and integrity protection ON. I view it as the Great Wall against all the garbage out there and I feel a bit safer. Thank you! 🙂👍

I’ve tested with my email, Pricerunner and Swedish Prisjakt and it works just fine without allowing affiliate- and tracking links. It can be because of the better moderated NextDNS and oisd blocklists.

At oisd.nl: "You won't find any false positives!
Or prove me wrong; I dare you to report any ;)"

I will if I find any. oisd is a great blocklist that would suit old mom and her browsing needs as well. 🙂

NextDNS with its unique position as part of a DNS-service takes care of the hidden, that which the others can’t see (CNAME in DNS records).

Anyhow, Podcaster and App Store both work fine now. 👍

Mikael Lundqvist I have reported false positives in the oisd blocklist three times. Every time they were corrected by the blocklist maintainer in less than 24h :-)

servilo I’ve thought a lot about it, how to block the unwanted tracking and ads most effectively, how to identify without all these blocklists. What is it that is unique for them? I tried a few years ago by developing a Safari extension but were only halfway successful. It turns out to be a very difficult problem. Those machine learning algorithms should be used to stop loading the garbage altogether.
