Why Linked IP

I am using NextDNS for many years

I am really a big fan of it

But i never understand that I can't use it freely with my ptcl router and my win7 pc

Well i know it's old but i want to use it properly with these devices

With ipv4 dns that most devices locally supports

It says that it need linked ip

I have dynamic ip and i need to first open next dns and relink ip everytime on my ip change

Kindly can you give me at least one proper reason to must link ip with NextDNS on ipv4 connection

Thanks

Muhammad Ali

Since every NextDNS user can have their own multiple configs, the NextDNS server needs to be able to tell what configs they're trying to use.

Notice that your NextDNS config IPv6 address starts with 2a07:a8c0 and 2a07:a8c1 followed by your config ID.  Due to the massive IPv6 address range, NextDNS can give two (or even more if they ever want to) IPv6 addresses for each config.

With DoT and DoH, the config ID is passed through SNI (for DoT) or through the URL (for DoH).

There's no such luxury with the plain unencrypted IPv4, NextDNS only owns 9 /24 subnet which translates to 2286 IPv4 addresses, not enough to link with every config uniquely. And thus the IP linking, where you tell NextDNS "if the query comes from this IP, assume it's for config X". They do allocate several IPs for it so you can use multiple configs from the same home (ie, your home IP can be linked against different NextDNS IP, which translates to different configs).

Would the premium users be willing to pay an extra fee for each dedicated IP? On Vultr one extra IPv4 address costs $2 a month

They do provide dedicated (and free!) IPv6 addresses for you as a premium user. But for the reason @Martheen mentioned regarding IPv4, they are increasingly rare (due to IPv4 address exhaustion) and therefore carry a significant additional cost.

Is there a reason you are unable to just run the NextDNS CLI on your router (preferable) or on each device you own? There are a number of advantages to this.

    My router supports dynamic dns

    But it's so expensive

It officially supports DynDNS.org and TZO

TZO is free but it's ended

DynDNS.org is by oracle and it's for 55$ per month

If anyone know how to run TZO DDNS these days

It will be a kind help

    Thanks
