Hi,

At https://apple.nextdns.io, the dropdown does not list any of the iPhone 16 devices,

regards

They are merely labels for logging and don’t affect how it works, so you can pick something else and still get the full benefit of NextDNS

It just shows the general lack of development of NextDNS.  After all, the iPhone 16 lineup came out almost 3 months ago.  It would only take about 30 seconds with Notepad++ to fix this.

I’m not disagreeing with you.   Sometimes people think the choice within the configurator implies the configuration is specific to the device.

I have been using NextDNS since the beginning and yeah, the stuff we see as users make it feel like nothing is going on.   Some time around a year ago, they did a few updates in a short period of time and it seemed like maybe they were going to dedicate more resources to the user side of things, but then nothing more happened.

I have noticed that whenever someone posts a diagnostic output, they seem to fix the problem quickly.   I believe they are investing their time on keeping the backend servers up and reliable.   It’s been extremely rare that the resolvers have any downtime.  They don’t communicate much with the user base, that’s for sure.

I have recently discovered tailscale (a super easy way to set up a wireguard vpn, free for home users).   With tailscale seeming to work well I’m going to investigate setting up a pihole for myself on my home network..   I originally found NextDNS when I was looking for a way to use pihole outside of my home network.   After setting up NextDNS all those years ago I never reconsidered pihole until now.  I’m sure a home based pihole in combination with tailscale will probably never achieve the performance or reliability of NextDNS, but I’m going to test it out and see how it compares feature wise.

One other thing to consider is the community has really stepped up with good lists and configuration instructions (Hagezi and Yokoffing

I have been testing an AdGuard Home server for the past few days and you can subscribe to all of those same block lists that you mentioned.  I generally have my iPhone automatically connect to my VPN as soon as I leave my Wi-Fi network anyway.  It also supports DoH, DoT, etc. unlike Pi-hole (which you can obviously do with add-ons).

Although I understand it isn’t a problem as far as functionality goes, it is rather annoying that such a simple update isn’t getting addressed. I would suggest they just let us input our own device model name if they don’t want to bother updating them in the future. That way, those of us that care for those types of details can take care of it.
