Where can I get a .dmg so I can install NextDNS on a mac?

    There isn't a link to download a .dmg file on the app store.

    Apple enforces many constraints on apps in the app store, if everyone only uses that it won't be long before Apple removes the ability to install software directly and will have even more power over developers. I refuse to use it as I want to support developers ability to build apps they want to build and distribute without undue interference from Apple.

      John Smith There is no official dmg solution offered by NextDNS. All the ways to use NextDNS you'll find within the Setup Guide on your configuration homepage for NextDNS.

      The next best solution in terms of feature parity would be the NextDNS CLI.

      John Smith As others said above from what I know, they don't provide the package directly. If you really don't want to supoort the Apple Store you can use the Apple Configuration Profile, I mean you are already supporting Apple by buying their computer so using the profile shouldn't be a problem and you wouldn't have to do something that you don't wish to do.

    Free? That's irrelevant to to me as I'd be be a paying customer already if I could install the app without using the App Store. I can download an Andriod .apk, a windows .exe and for linux it's open source.

    It's not about supporting Apple or not, I just don't want them to have too much leverage over developers or control over what I can run on my computer. I'll try the Apple Configuration Profile.

    Apple actually removed the NextDNS app from the iOS app store about a month ago (validating my reasoning for not wanting to use the Mac App store). I don't know if the App Configuration Profile tool at apple.nextdns.io was built specifically as a workaround after the app was removed but I wouldn't be suprised. Maybe they knew it was always a possibility so built it as a contingency measure.

    Seems odd to me that there's tool that will provide a signed configuration profile .mobileconfig yet I can't download a .dmg of the app, the app seems to be so much more user friendly. It's trivial to put it in an S3 bucket or similar.

      John Smith The developer chooses not to offer a direct download, because it's probably more convenient for them (no code for in-app updates, no server costs), making the App Store the best option for their use case (unpaid app).

      It's a bit weird that you insist on a .dmg and don't want Apple to have leverage over developers, yet it's the developer himself that couldn't be bothered with the direct download.

      The profile exists because iOS 14 and macOS Big Sur added system features that made it possible. Anyone using older systems can only use the app (or the IP and CLI stuff).
