Help with Configuration to Use Next DNS with a VPN

Hi,

I need help setting up NextDNS with Proton VPN on Ubuntu Studio 24.04.

I have no DNS resolution when I turn on my VPN; the thing is, I am sure it used to work when I used a cli version of the VPN client.

I'm not certain, but try this out.

If you also have the NextDNS client installed on your computer...

    1. Per the guide here, Set your Proton VPN configuration to use custom DNS, and set the IP to 127.0.0.1.
    2. Ensure NextDNS client is running on your computer.
    3. Start your Proton VPN connection. The client should tell the OS to use 127.0.0.1, which is where NextDNS should be listening locally on your system. NextDNS should then handle the DNS and route it outbound over DNS over HTTPS or DNS over TLS, provided the VPN client isn't explicitly blocking those.
    4. Test internet access by browsing to any website of your choosing
    5. Test the correct NextDNS policy is being used by visiting the setup page for your NextDNS policy and seeing at the top if NextDNS declares it's using your policy or not.

Hi, thanks. I just tried that, but I had the same issue. It is probably something quite

simple that I am missing. I have the same setup using Windows 10 on another computer, I shall compare the configuration. Thanks again

    https://protonvpn.com/support/custom-dns

This is their official guide to using other DNS providers. However be warned, it seems Proton's implementing of custom DNS does not stay inside the VPN tunnel. Therfore all DNS requests will be routed over your normal Internet connection and not the VPN, even if the VPN is connected.
