NextDNS knows my real IP even though I'm on a VPN. How?

Hi all, was wondering if anyone knows why my IP address is available in the analytics tab even though I am using a VPN?

It shows up as a long sting of numbers and letters like 3532:fes7:2nj06n7:ikh7:gg6a and correctly identifies my location and ISP. 

Using NextDNS is the only way I would've known my IP address is leaking (if this is even an IP address?)

I am using an iPhone with a combination of NordVPN and NextDNS - using Adguard Pro as a custom DNS configuration to allow both a VPN profile and a VPN config to run at once. 

I have performed a DNS leak test and no leak was found. The DNS leak test website only shows my VPN IP address, however my IP still shows correctly in the analytics logs!

Could it be that only NextDNS knows my real IP because I am using it as a VPN configuration file on my phone in tandem with NordVPN? It does not always show my real IP, sometimes will show the IP of the VPN I'm using.

    That number is your IPV6 address, NextDNS wouldn't / shouldn't be able to get your original IP while using a VPN, at least on IPV4 while I'm on a VPN it shows my VPN IP on the logs not my actual IP. So I would definty look for a Leak Test including IPV6 if it isn't showing up on that test at least it's not leaking, could be NextDNS being able to get the original IP.

      Hey thanks for your reply! So this is my IPv6 address - how would it normally be leaking? The only thing I can think of is when I switch from cellular data to wifi. Do you think it could be the switch over which causes my NordVPN to leak my actual IPv6? Because NordVPN only says it supports IPv4.

      Xander Well, your question has mostly been answered, it's quite shocking, they should invest their ad budget into their development budget honestly.

      On a second note I'd say use Azire, it's a VPN I have come to love in the US, it supports IPV6 and you can download their Wireguard config that should work fine with NextDNS pretty sure someone has a thread about Wireguard and how to make it work with NextDNS on iOS

     and that's the problem/ the reason. It's just ridiculous. The Domain Name System (DNS) has supported IPv6 since 2008. 

    Anyway why did you use it?

      DynamicNotSlow makes sense! So I need to find a VPN that runs IPv6? I used NordVPN because I thought they work well in tandem with a custom VPN config so I can also use NextDNS too on my iPhone. That's an issue with NextDNS and all other DNS services - there's no easy way to use it with VPNs.

      JCVR Yes. VPNs are also pushed by media and "privacy" communities with dangerous superficial knowledge

      JCVR there are many privacy and security issues to which reputable VPNs fix. It does add an additional layer of potential technical issues, and I wouldn't recommend it for everyone, but it's one of the best technologies we have. Perhaps NextDNS is working on their own VPN now :)

    An update - this only appears to happen while I'm on my home Wifi network, which is unexplainable for me as to the reason so far.

      Xander if your mobile network provider doesn’t provide you a IPv6 while your ISP for home network does, it makes sense.

      DynamicNotSlow thank you thank you thank you!! This provided the key bit of information I was missing. Updated my router settings to disable IPv6 and there's no more DNS leaks.
