Interpret ping.nextdns.io results

What is the meaning of the white box next to zepto-lax ?

It's my understanding that the bold entries designate the currently used DNS server.

I don’t always get a white box, especially when using a VPN.

Please advise

Normally, this white button represents the currently selected server. However, the best way to test the currently selected server is by using https://test.nextdns.io/.

if the white box designates the currently selected server, what does the bold server(s) represent?   Why sometimes no white box even when the status page says everything is working?

      - The server names in bold are the ultralow servers that resolve the 2 domain names ipv4.dns1.nextdns.io and ipv4.dns2.nextdns.io
      - The selected server (with white box) matches the server querying the domain name <random>.test.nextdns.io
      - There is no white box in the ping result, which means the device is selecting a 3rd party DNS server.

You may be referring to the case where 2 servers have the same server name. The reason is when resolving domain names ipv4.dns1.nextdns.io and ipv4.dns2.nextdns.io with the same server IP address.
