Router shows web history evening when using NextDNS

I thought if using NextDNS, the phone won't send DNS requests to the router so the router won't know which sites I visit. But the router still shows the web history of the phone.

Is my assumption correct, or am I missing something?

How have you setup your phone to use NextDNS?

It's an ASUS router. The web browser of a laptop uses Cloudflare as the DNS provider (not NextDNS), not OS default, the ASUS router still displays the websites that the web browser visited. Not sure how it happens.

Browsers by default use built-in DoH resolvers. You need to edit your bowsers settings and tell it not to use the builtin secure DNS resolver, but to use your system default. Then on your OS you either point your OS to a secure NextDNS cli proxy, NextDNS app on it, or implement NextDNS at the OS level if your OS supports it.

What DNS server is your phone pointing to? If you've configured your router to point to NextDNS not your phone then your router will make the secure connection to NextDNS (so your ISP can't see) but the router can still see what your phones looking for.

If you configure it on your phone your router should only see traffic to dns.nextdns.io.

My Android phone is using Private DNS [xxxx.dns.nextdns.io] as instructed on the setup page of nextDNS.

My router is using AdGuard DNS.

The ASUS router displays the websites (names not IP addresses) I visited. No traffic to dns.nextdns.io is displayed.

The log page of nextDNS displays the URLs correctly, so my phone is using nextDNS.

Why haven't you set your router up to go to NextDNS? Likely it's blocking other DOH providers on your local network.

No, the router is using another DNS.
